Professional services firms sell expertise by the hour. Every hour a partner, consultant or finance lead spends hunting for something in a system is an hour not spent on client work. As AI agents start to share the back-office workload, a new problem appears: keeping track of what the agents need from you. Business Central 29.0 answers it with a single task pane.

The industry challenge

A typical consulting, engineering or accountancy firm runs a lean finance function. Often there's a finance manager, one or two accounts staff and a practice manager who covers operations. These are exactly the firms that benefit most from AI agents. A payables agent can process supplier invoices, a sales agent can draft orders and an expense agent can handle staff claims.

But agents don't work entirely alone. They draft, and people review. They suggest, and people confirm. Each agent produces follow-ups:

  • A draft purchase invoice waiting for approval
  • A new vendor created from an invoice and blocked until someone checks it
  • A validation that needs a human decision
  • A suggestion that a person should accept or dismiss

When those prompts are spread across different pages and notifications, they get missed. A missed agent task is worse than no agent, because the work looks handled when it isn't.

What Microsoft delivered in Business Central 29.0

Business Central 29.0 adds a dedicated task pane that shows every task generated by agents. According to Microsoft:

  • The pane opens as an extra panel and can be reached from anywhere in Business Central.
  • Tasks include suggestions, validations, follow-ups, access to draft documents and other actions started by agents.
  • Users can read the task details, go straight to the affected record, complete the task or dismiss it.

Microsoft says the main beneficiaries are roles that work heavily with AI-driven processes, such as accountants, salespeople and managers who deal with several agents during the day.

Where the value shows up

Business areaImpact for a professional services firm
Finance team capacityOne place to clear agent work instead of checking several pages
ControlFewer missed reviews, so fewer unchecked drafts and blocked vendors
Cash flowSupplier invoices and client billing move on time
Management visibilityManagers can see what is waiting on people versus on agents
AdoptionStaff trust agents more when the human side of the workflow is clear

The biggest benefit is throughput. In a small finance team, the bottleneck is rarely the agent. It's the human review step. Putting every review in one queue makes that bottleneck visible and manageable.

A worked scenario

Consider an engineering consultancy with 60 staff and a two-person finance team (an illustrative example). It uses a payables agent for supplier invoices, a sales order agent for repeat client orders and an expense agent for staff claims.

Before the task pane, the finance manager checked purchase drafts in one place, sales drafts in another and expense items in a third. On busy days, a vendor that the agent had created and blocked could sit for a week, delaying payment to a key sub-consultant.

With Business Central 29.0, the finance manager starts each morning with the task pane. Every open item from every agent is in one list. They open the blocked vendor, check the bank details against the sub-consultant's letterhead and unblock it. Then they approve two purchase drafts and dismiss a duplicate suggestion. The queue is clear in 20 minutes, and nothing is waiting in a page that nobody opened.

Adoption considerations

  • Make the task pane a daily habit. Build it into the finance team's morning routine, like checking email.
  • Agree who owns which tasks. If several people supervise agents, decide who clears what so tasks don't bounce around.
  • Watch the backlog. A growing queue is an early warning that agent volume is outpacing human review capacity.
  • Use it to tune agents. Tasks that keep being dismissed point to agent instructions or data that need adjusting.
  • Train for the dismiss action. Dismissing is a decision. Make sure staff know when dismissing is right and when they should escalate.

The bottom line

Professional services firms adopt AI agents to give scarce finance and operations people their time back. The agent task pane in Business Central 29.0 makes sure that time isn't lost again chasing agent follow-ups around the system. It turns several sources of AI-generated work into one queue that a lean team can actually manage.

If you're planning to run several agents in Business Central, it's worth designing the human review process with an experienced adviser before you scale.
